1. About the Art Competition

The Babalakin & Co. Art Competition (the “Competition”) is organised by Babalakin & Co. Legal Practitioners (the “Organiser”) for the purpose of fostering artistic expression, promoting emerging artistic talent, and supporting youth empowerment and community development.

The Competition provides eligible participants with an opportunity to submit original artworks for review, evaluation, and potential selection by a judging panel and an independent art curator.

2. Who We Are

Babalakin & Co. (the “Firm”, “We” or “Us”) is the data controller in respect of personal data processed in connection with the Competition. We determine the purposes and means of processing your personal data.

3. What Type of Data Do We Collect from You?

We collect and process the following categories of personal data from applicants:

  • Identification and contact details, including name, email address, and telephone number
  • National identity number
  • Copies of official identification documents (including national identity cards or passports)
  • Artwork submissions and any accompanying descriptive information

National identity numbers and identification documents are collected and processed solely for the purpose of verifying compliance with the age eligibility requirements applicable to the Art Competition.

If you are a site visitor, we collect information about your device, including your IP address. We do not use cookies on our website. For reassurance, you can disable cookies on your browser.

4. Purposes and Lawful Bases of Processing

We process personal data for the following purposes:

  • To verify identity and confirm eligibility, including age verification
  • To administer, manage, and operate the Art Competition
  • To evaluate submissions, shortlist artworks, and select participants
  • To communicate with applicants in relation to the Art Competition

The lawful bases for processing personal data under the NDPA include:

  • Processing necessary for the performance of a contract or to take steps at the request of the data subject prior to participation in the Art Competition
  • Processing necessary for compliance with legal or regulatory obligations, including eligibility and age-related requirements
  • Processing necessary for legitimate interests relating to site administration and content delivery

Where processing requires consent, a separate consent request will be provided. Consent may be refused or withdrawn at any time without affecting prior lawful processing.

5. Disclosure and Recipients of Personal Data

Shortlisted artworks, together with limited associated personal data, may be disclosed to an independent third-party art curator for evaluation, curation, and judging purposes.

The art curator may act as an independent data controller or as a data processor, as applicable.

6. Data Retention

Personal data collected in connection with the Competition will be retained only for as long as is reasonably necessary to achieve the purposes set out in this Privacy Notice.

Unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law, all personal data will be securely deleted or anonymised six (6) months after completion of the Art Competition.

7. Data Security

We have implemented appropriate technical and organisational measures to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of personal data, including access controls and safeguards designed to prevent unauthorised access, unlawful processing, accidental loss, destruction, or damage.

8. Your Data Protection Rights

As a data subject, you have the following rights:

  1. Right to be informed of how your personal data is processed
  2. Right to request access to your personal data
  3. Right to request erasure or deletion
  4. Right to rectification
  5. Right to object to processing, particularly for legitimate interests
  6. Right to lodge a complaint or institute legal action

You may lodge a complaint with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) if you believe your data has been processed in violation of the NDPA.
